Crushing App Design with GoKoji

Historically, to develop an app you would need to be pretty savvy when it comes to coding and design. The team of gometa.com , Dmitry Shapiro and the amazing Luis Chavez, responsible for the Metaverse Augmented Reality platform is back at it again with a new technology revolutionizing app development. GoKoji.com launched in Apirl 2019 and brings app design to non developers by leveraging app templates of popular gaming apps and platforms such as Gem Crush, Slots (Spin to Win), Phaser, Memory Game, Snake and even a Microblog app (Twitter). This platform makes app development so much more accessible to teachers and students!

How does Koji work?

Koji essentially crowdsources app coding templates from developers and makes them available on their platform for free to those in education, and looks to be sort of the Fiverr of app design when it comes to the commercial market, allowing developers to also charge for their templates or have people post requests. The platform just debuted in April of 2019, so the number of different app templates available are slightly limited, but as word of mouth contributes to a growing community the number of templates is expected to expand as well. One of my favorite things about Koji is the community forum that allows users to ask for help and feedback from professionals in industry. This really leverages the idea of crowdsourcing for learning making this a powerful educational communication platform where students and teachers can directly connection with developers. There is also an amazing collaborate feature that allows anyone you share the link with to join in on editing the project you currently have open. This really opens up student to trade relationships and troubleshooting.

How can I get started with my students?

If you are a teacher and want to get started immediately with your students, you simply create an account, or have your students create an account, and then duplicate any of the templates in the dashboard and you are ready to begin! Once an app has been duplicated you can begin customizing images, sounds, and background colors within the template. For more advanced middle and high school students you may want to prompt them to review and edit the code. As changes are made you can scan a QR code within the platform to test the app in its current state. Deconstruction is a truly valuable approach to understanding the bones and inner workings of an application.

Just for fun I took Gem Crush and created #VRpodcastCrush as a sort of marketing hook for The Virtual Reality Podcast. Members of our twitter social media community immediately started playing our version of essentially candy crush where they match our faces to earn points. There is also a leaderboard which makes the game social and competitive. The beautiful part is I was able to customize, publish, and deploy the whole app in under 5-10 minutes! It works on all devices with its own special link generated by the Gokoji.com platform. The user interface is very intuitive and I expect to see this platform quickly become integrated into upper elementary through high school age groups.

You can give our faces some crushing by going to this link...be warned, the leaderboard is virtually impossible to top now! We have had some real pros play!

Here are some curricular ideas for some of the app templates available:

Gem Crush:

“Vowel Crush Version”

For younger students working on vowel recognition do a “Vowel Crush Version”

Replace the images with letters, and code the sound of the vowel as they match the consecutive vowels to crush. They will be crushing vowel recognition in no time!

Twitter Trainingwheels

Create a walled garden version of twitter for your younger classes to safely tweet and share about classroom content. No more sorting through the entire globe to find the content from your class alone!

By creating a walled off twitter, students are able to begin practicing their hashtags, #booksnaps, and sharing of ideas web within a safe environment until they are ready to remove their twitter training wheels.

App Smashing

GoKoji and Classcraft Slot Machine

Mages? Warrior? Healer? Dragon? Match faces for special perks or perhaps have everyone be met with turmoil

Include the link to the game in one of the random events….Stumbled upon the slippery slot.

How can you see integrating Koji into your classroom ?Be sure to share any of the games you make with us here in the comments! Extra points for #Teachingland themed games!
